Get the sizing right and your heat pump warms the room quickly, sips power and lasts for years. Get it wrong and you’re either shivering in front of a unit that runs flat out, or paying too much for one that’s bigger than you’ll ever need. Here’s how to get it right.
Why heat pump size matters more than brand
Heat pump capacity is measured in kilowatts (kW) of heating and cooling output. Think of it like matching a kettle to a cup: too small and it never quite gets there; too big and you’ve wasted money.
An undersized unit runs at maximum capacity constantly, which wears it out faster and struggles on the coldest Auckland mornings. An oversized unit short-cycles — switching on and off repeatedly — which is inefficient, noisy and surprisingly bad at controlling humidity. The sweet spot is a system sized to your actual room, not a guess.
The four things that decide the right size
There’s no single “5kW does every lounge” answer, because two rooms of the same floor area can need very different capacity. These four factors do most of the work:
1. Floor area and ceiling height
Bigger volume of air = more kW. A standard 2.4m ceiling needs less than a raked or 2.7m ceiling of the same footprint.
2. Glazing and sun
Large windows lose heat fast in winter and gain it fast in summer. A north-facing sunroom behaves very differently from a south-facing bedroom.
3. Insulation
A well-insulated, draught-sealed home holds heat — so it needs a smaller unit. Older Auckland villas and uninsulated rooms need more.
4. What the room is for
Open-plan living-dining-kitchen spaces, or rooms you want toasty all evening, need more capacity than a bedroom you only take the chill off.
A rough Auckland sizing guide
These are starting points only — we always measure before quoting — but they help set expectations:
- Bedroom / small room (up to 20m²): 2.0–2.5kW high-wall unit
- Standard living room (20–35m²): 3.5–5.0kW high-wall unit
- Large or open-plan living (35–60m²): 6.0–8.0kW, or a multi-room or ducted system
- Whole home: A ducted system sized across multiple zones.
Auckland’s mild-but-humid climate is forgiving compared to the deep south, but damp winters mean dehumidifying performance matters — another reason not to oversize.
High-wall, floor console, cassette or ducted?
Size isn’t the only choice — the type of unit matters too:
- High-wall units are the most popular and cost-effective for most rooms.
- Floor consoles suit rooms where you want fast, draught-free warmth at floor level.
- Ceiling cassettes disappear into the ceiling for larger, open spaces.
- Ducted systems heat and cool the whole home invisibly, with zone control.
